Monologue

2009

This piece starts from my relationship with my brother. The age gap of 8 years, opposite personalities, and psychological and emotional turmoil due to the brother’s brain surgery led to the relationship devastation between the two. The elder’s complex against his younger brother and innate emotional instability was expressed through physical and verbal violence against me. The memories I shared with my brother are nightmares that I always want to escape and am afraid of.

These memories have contributed to a large extent to my psychological disability and emotional instability. Afraid of having to face up to these fears, I hid them as the most shameful and sad memories.

Monologue(2009)’ starts by facing up to my brother in a straightforward way, rather than enlarging the emotion to be heavier, bolder or calmer. Character inside the film facing the camera in the laptop computer sits on a desk to interrogate, and the examinee – camera – becomes the viewer watching the film. The relationship of ‘old’ and ‘younger’ brother needs not to be revealed. Although I act as the interrogator, he actually portrays someone who represents the victim.

Excluding the influence (emotion/conscience), tales are told; detailed interrogation (year/time/space/details) are questioned and examined.
